BCA delivering renewal

Education and family learning

Some of the things we are doing in this area include:

The BRITE Centre

The Braunstone Reading Information Technology and Entertainment – BRITE – Centre has been developed with Leicester City Council to replace the old library on Braunstone Avenue.

Learning Mentors

Learning mentors have been provided in secondary schools that serve Braunstone to support pupils, and in the community to work with children who have been excluded from school or who do not attend for other reasons.

Broadening Horizons

School trips, music lessons, dance and drama groups, revision guides and GCSE coursework materials for Braunstone children.

Nurture Groups

Classes to improve confidence and communication skills for children struggling in the mainstream classroom. There are 6 primary school and 2 secondary school groups. ‘We learn about literacy, numeracy and we do poems too. I like it when we make breakfast.’
Kyle Mackness, Queensmead Junior School pupil

Our goal is to:

Create a culture in which education is valued and aspired to by all members of the community.

By 2008 we aim to ensure that:

  • The educational attainment of pupils at all key stages has made significant progress towards the city average.
  • There is a significant increase in the number of people engaged in lifelong learning opportunities and acquiring formal qualifications.

Key Partners include:

  • Local Education Authority
  • Local Schools
  • Leicester Learning Zone
  • Leicester College
  • Learning & Skills Council
